Why I Start With Constraints

Constraints are often treated like obstacles to creativity. I usually find the opposite: the right constraints make the direction much easier to see.

Blank-page freedom sounds wonderful until everything is possible.

Every typeface could work.

Every colour could work.

Every composition could work.

And very quickly, nothing has a reason to exist.

That is why I like starting projects by identifying constraints.

Constraints create a frame

A constraint can be practical.

The packaging has limited space.

The campaign needs to work in both landscape and vertical formats.

The existing logo cannot change.

There are ten product variants that need to feel connected.

Or it can be strategic.

The brand needs to feel premium without becoming inaccessible.

The product needs to feel medical without feeling intimidating.

Once those boundaries are clear, design decisions become much easier to judge.

Fewer arbitrary decisions

Without a framework, a designer can spend hours comparing two perfectly acceptable colours.

With a framework, the question changes.

Which colour better supports the positioning?

Which layout scales across the range?

Which typography survives both packaging and digital use?

That is a much more useful discussion.

Creativity needs something to push against

Constraints do not remove creativity.

They give creativity resistance.

Some of the strongest project decisions I have made came from having to solve around a limitation rather than pretending it did not exist.

The result is usually less decorative and more intentional.

That is also why I prefer understanding production, format and usage early. They are not problems waiting at the end of the project.

They are information that can make the beginning better.
